Maybe the name doesn't scream out at you right away, but if you watched popular television over the past few years, you've clearly seen Julie McNiven. With roles on Mad Men, Supernatural, and Stargate Universe plus stints on Fringe, Desperate Housewives and Brotherhood, Ms. McNiven has surely popped up on your DVR. What you might not know is Julie is actually a Massachusetts native. She grew up in Amherst, Mass. where softball, swimming and gymnastics occupied her early childhood only to be trumped by theatre and dance after her first role in a musical in 8th grade and because of that she wanted to be an actress from age 10 or 11. She received a BFA from Salem State University and moved to NYC. That wasn't the end of her Boston time though. She did a few shows at the BCA and spent a summer singing on the harbour cruise "Spirit of Boston." In NY she met her husband and after a few years pounding the pavement there, the couple moved out to LA. They got married in Malibu last summer. The former Lindsay Lohan stand in was kind enough to answer a few interview questions for me about her experiences on television and what's next with her career.

Ken: So you worked on Mad Men which is a critical and commercial hit, and worked on Supernatural and SGU both very high up on the cult status, if you could pick one type to do again, the critical hit or the cult hit, what would you choose and why?

JM: "I had such amazing experiences in all three! It would be hard to choose one. With Supernatural and SGU, the scifi aspect is very exciting...I mean, come on, I 'died' twice on each show! Supernatural was great because my character changed so much from beginning to end, always keeping me on my toes. Mad Men on the other hand was extremely challenging because Hildy didn't have a lot to say, so when she had a scene I wanted to have a full fledged character, not just a secretary who pops in every once in a while. SGU was fun because Ginn was the girl who could be giddy as hell exploring her love for Eli, but she could also take charge and shoot a man who is threatening the good guys. Honestly, the critical hit vs. cult hit doesn't matter to me at all. My happiness on each show was purely based on the people I got to work with and the roles I was given to create."

Ken: SGU and Supernatural both filmed in Canada, I've heard others who loved Vancouver and that area, what did you think?

JM: "I absolutely LOVE Vancouver! One because the city is beautiful and very easily walkable, and two because the city keeps giving me work!"

Ken: You're known for your red hair and porcelain skin, what would you like others to know you for? Distinct laugh, flub lines often, known to be the best cast member that everyone loves? Something like that?

JM: "Well, I think so far I'm known to be the girl who keeps dying! My poor father has seen me die so many times! I didn't tell him that I died on Desperate Housewives after a mere 3 scenes...I didn't want to ruin it for him....but I learned my lesson, he needs a warning for when I'm going to be strangled to death...which has now happened twice."

Ken: Were you a fan of the Stargate series or Supernatural before you joined? I know me personally I never got into the Stargate shows until SGU. I loved the original movie with Russell and Spader, but didn't get into the first shows, but got hooked into SGU from the beginning. I just started getting into Supernatural and have watched the first few seasons on DVD.

JM: "I never had watched Stargate but my dad is a scifi fan, so when I got my audition for Ginn I had to call him right away with questions. "Who are the G'aoulds" and what the heck does 'going into FTL mean?!" He filled me in on a bit of the history of what I needed to know for my audition. As for Supernatural, I had seen many episodes and enjoyed the show before my audition."

Ken: Eli (actor David Blue) finally gets a girlfriend on SGU after pining over another woman and then bam they kill off your character, did you know in advance that you were being written off or did you get the script and were totally shocked Ginn got the axe?

JM: "I knew that my original contract was for 5 episodes and I just assumed I would die, but I had no idea Ginn would fall in love."

Ken: In a related question, how shocked were you that SyFy cancelled SGU the way they did?

JM: "I wasn't shocked because networks use the archaic Neilsen Rating to determine the life of a show and SGU was not getting the ratings it needed. I was more disappointed because the show had really picked up steam and had it been given another season I think the viewers would've jumped aboard."

Ken: I worked briefly with Jon Hamm on The Town, he thoroughly impressed me, you worked a lot with him, how did it take him so long to become famous? How do you feel about it being delayed for the upcoming season? Still friends with your former cast members?

JM: "I have no idea how it took him that look to get famous! He is ridiculously charming and handsome! I do keep in touch with some cast members and crew. I don't think it will hurt the show at all to start later this year. It will give me more time to catch up when the dvd comes out this summer."

Ken: What's next for you professionally? You sticking with television or would you branch into more film work or a good combination of both?

JM: "Well, I am currently auditioning for projects both in TV and film so it's more about the role and project then about whether it's TV or film."

Ken: What do you get recognized for more, SGU, Supernatural, Mad Men? How crazy are those fans? I can't even imagine.

JM: "Well, on the street it's only happened twice I think and both were very nice. Once was Mad Men and the other was Supernatural. And, I just did a flashmob for Claire Wineland who has Cystic Fibrosis and is raising money for a lung transplant and a few Supernatural fans danced with us. I haven't run into any craziness! Just people who love the show."
