Dollhouse creator Whedon filming series prequel
Whedon shakes up the order of his midseason Fox series Dollhouse by shooting a new "prequel" episode to serve as the show's pilot.
Ever since Fox canceled Joss Whedon's 2002 series Firefly, fans have groused that the network sabotaged the show's chances by airing its episodes out of sequence.
Now Whedon himself is shaking up the order of his midseason Fox series Dollhouse.
The creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is shooting a new "prequel" episode to serve as the show's pilot. Whedon said he opted to craft a new introduction to the series after meeting with Fox executives, who expressed concerns about the accessibility of the first episode.
"When we talked to the network I got a sense of hesitation about what we had, and I understood why," Whedon said Tuesday on the Dollhouse set. "There's a concern about the audience coming into this world. I respect their need to draw in an audience and present this a certain way."
Whedon acknowledged that there are similarities to the "Firefly" experience.
"That's why I hit myself on the head for this," Whedon said. "Having been through this I should know I need to deliver a way to get into a story. These are not stupid people (at the network), and I decided I needed to make a pre-emptive strike. I wasn't going to entrench around my art; television is a fluid process. So I said that I know a way to satisfy everyone."
Whedon said the new first episode will allow him to select from previously shot footage to figure out "the most iconic way from what we had to introduce each character."
Added star Eliza Dushku, "And I didn't get to wear my leather pants in the pilot, so that was a deal-breaker."
In Dollhouse, a group of people are programmed with various abilities and personalities and rented out for assignments to high-paying clients. They are kept stored in an underground compound that resembles a Zen-like spa. One of the Dolls, Echo (Dushku), gradually begins to become self-aware.
"I wanted everybody to feel like Echo is in this terrible situation, slash, 'can somebody wipe my memory and feed me and put me in a wonderful spa and give me massages too?' " Whedon said of the elaborate set.
The tone of each episode, he added, will shift based on the Dolls' assignment, a tactic that some might consider risky.
"Every time I'm here, I worry that this show is the big mess, that this is the time I will fail," he said. "At the same time you learn to let go of that or not one word you will write."

Citation:
In a boon for Tahmoh (and Tahmoh fans) the new pilot will include Paul doing some Muay Thai, as Joss reveals in a long, interesting interview with the Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan:
I’ve just finished the script of the new first episode, and I’ve really used the opportunity to really amp some of the characters and their introductions. [Cast member] Tahmoh [Penikett’s] going to do some Muay Thai. He’s going to be unhappy about the Muay Thai. “Do I hafta? Darn!” [Whedon was joking -- Tahmoh’s very into martial arts]
The downside to the new pilot is that there will be no new clips to show at Comic Con this weekend, as Joss explains in signature comic fashion:
R.D.A.: But how will this affect the foundation of the very turning of our precious earth, and by that I mean Comiccon?
Joss: Yeah. Unfortunately, we won’t have a new teaser to show, since we’ll start shooting after the con. People will have to settle for chatting with Eliza and Tahmoh. But they’re likeable folk. (Sadly, Tahmoh only speaks Canadian, though he has a lovely translator at his side, like Isabella Rosselini in “White Nights”.)

Joss Whedon shuts down Dollhouse
Prolific producer pauses production on program; says quality on scripts sucked; 24 also halted.
Joss Whedon knows quality work when he sees it, and he should. As the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Whedon is revered as a god in some of the geekier circles.
So when Joss thinks that it's time to stop production on a show because he doesn't feel it's going as well as it should, it's time to stop production. Whedon has put his anticipated new show Dollhouse on hold, believing that some of the scripts just aren't Whedon-worthy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Joss has apparently been so busy in the director's chair that he hasn't been able to work on the show's upcoming scripts. So when he finally had a chance to see upcoming scripts, he decided to slow things down a bit to do some rewrites. Production is due to start up again in late September, but given that the drama is a midseason entry, Dollhouse is comfortably ahead of schedule.
Dollhouse stars Eliza Dushku as an agent for a secret organization that specializes in imprinting memories and personalities into its agents, who are hired out for espionage, business, and...pleasure. Though most are blissfully unaware of their situation, Dushku's character soon becomes cognizant of what's going on, and thus begins some big-time drama and action.
Dollhouse isn't the only midseason Fox show to be put on the skids. 24 has also momentarily shut down production so that its producers can improve the direction of the final episodes. According to the show's bosses, they feel that they have the time, so they may as well make it the best darned show it can be. 24 had eight episodes in the can before the writers strike last year, so the political thriller is way ahead of schedule and should experience no delays.
Nothing to worry about here. In fact, if anything, it's a sign of great things to come from both shows.
